portents of an “improved but imperfect” presidency?
if there’s one thing that might have made a clinton supporter out of me, it would’ve been this:
[Obama] ended up voting for what he called “an improved but imperfect bill” after backing a failed attempt earlier in the day to strip the immunity provision from the bill through an amendment… Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Democrat of New York, who had battled Mr. Obama for the nomination, voted against the [FISA] bill.
of course, had she won the nomination, i’m guessing hillary too might have felt differently about FISA — especially knowing she’d be next in line to take those fancy new executive powers out for a spin. still, at least she’s able to mimic the basic postures of leadership, which is more than i can say today for the other guy. “improved but imperfect”?? way to set the bar higher, mister reform candidate.
obama won’t take the oath of office for another six months — it is way too early for buyer’s remorse to be setting in.

Obama’s not going to get any bump in the polls for pussing out.
And he’s still going to be painted as an anti-American coddler of terrorists by incorrigibly dishonest right wing smear merchants such as Rick “Let’s Google My Name ‘Cuz My Desperate Ass Needs Attention” Wilson and the media toadies who take their cues from his sort.
yep. if there’s one thing he should’ve figured out by now, it’s that you can’t win on a strategy of continually inoculating yourself against anticipated future attacks — they will always come up with some other bit of preposterous crap to fling at you. better to fight it out on the stuff that matters and sidestep the stuff that doesn’t, like the old obama would. where’s that obama jujitsu that won him the primary?
look, barack: the people you’re trying to win over with this stunt are fucking cattle. they’re low-information voters, and they don’t even care which side you come down on — they wouldn’t know FISA from a hole in the ground — they just want to see you act like a leader. that’s how they decide what the correct position is in the first place: it’s the one taken by the guy who knows what he’s talking about and seems to have a pair. that’s all leadership is. you don’t let mccain tell them what the right vote is. you tell them. if you act like you mean it, they’ll believe you.
