Frankly, I did give at least B’s for effort. Particularly if a kid obviously had some difficulty writing, or thinking critically, or even getting through the reading for that matter, if they really put forth a tremendous effort but only “earned” a C, I’d usually give them a B. But then I don’t think I share the same philosophy as many in the academic world–that is, that only people good at critical thinking and writing and logical reasoning are “smart”, and that only those people are really worth our time.
