josh, “president bush’s word-of-the-day calendar”
Tue, May 31 – 4:04pm 2005
i had to chuckle this morning when professor george, by way of dismissing amnesty international’s condemnation of abuse & torture at gitmo as “absurd,” decided to teach the white house press corps a new word:
Amnesty International appeared to base some of their allegations on detainees, “people who hate America, people that have been trained in some instances to disassemble, that means not tell the truth. So it was an absurd report,” Bush said.
that’s no typo; i heard the audio, and he definitely says “disassemble,” as in “NO DISASSEMBLE, STEPHANIE!”
i don’t know what’s more preposterous — that our C-student-in-chief thinks it’s his place to explain the meaning of a common word to a roomful of people who write for a living, or that he doesn’t even know what it means himself. classic bush.
of course, what’s truly fucked up is that numbnuts can speak with a straight face about telling the truth, and that we’re expected to believe the allegations of abuse are pure fiction simply because some of those claiming to have been abused may or may not “hate america,” whatever that means. i’d say the AA report is the least “absurd” thing about this whole situation.
