Monsoon season again

Is it just me, or is it starting to seem like significant floods are becoming something of a regular event in Iowa?

Seriously… if anyone back there has started building an ark, it might actually be less than 100% crazy. Times like these the unofficial Ohio motto, “boring but safe,” certainly seems appropriate.

On the other hand, this sure is awesome:

Lightning behind Jack Trice Stadium

In this day and age I can't help immediately suspecting that this is a Photoshop job, but in this case who cares. Awesome.

(This photo seems like it bounced around a number of e-mails before reaching me, though I kind of think it may be the work of this gentleman, for what that’s worth.)

  • Yeah, somehow the Iowa Corps of Engineers managed not to flood Iowa City this year, but who knows how long that’ll last. It wasn’t that long ago that the dam south of Manchester burst. I happened to watch one of the morning shows as I got ready this morning and they referred to this all as “is THIS global warming?” and brought up the idiotic “what about all that snow?” Wow, how bad must it get before it becomes truth?

Yeah I grew up not too far from Monticello, which had some flooding when the dam burst; I was watching that one too.

How bad must it get… hm… “pretty bad” is my guess. (But you knew I’d say that.)

  • did you guys see this?

“So what most Iowans suspected is verified: Iowa is enduring its wettest three-year period in the 127 years official weather records have been kept.”

chet culver’s calling catstrophic floods “the new normal.” i think it’s finally beginning to sink in out there.

Hm. Interesting… People have certainly been stuck at that “denial” stage for long enough, after all. And there are still four stages to go after it.

“Anger” and “bargaining” should be a real hoot if folks begin moving on to them a widespread basis.
