Fisking John Kasich, by John Kasich

I’m still not going to join the stampede to pontificate about the Tucson shooting; it hasn’t even been one week for chrissakes. Honestly, I’m tempted to just not even bother with the issue, ever. I probably will, but in the meantime, I find a post I had considered writing has basically written itself: on Monday, I considered venting my disgust at the ridiculous charade which was new Ohio Governor John Kasich’s inauguration speech, but didn’t get around to it.

Today, however, I found that (in a departure from its heretofore fawning propaganda for the man) The Plain Dealer has actually published an item critical of Johnny K; what’s more, Kasich’s own quotes in this new article pretty much perfectly rebut his own inaugural address.

Kasich on Monday: “My inauguration is your inauguration. I want everyone to understand that I hope you can realize we accept this responsibility together.”

Today:Gov. John Kasich is on pace to be the first Ohio governor since 1962 to have an entire Cabinet without any racial diversity.

“Let’s Get Our Story Straight, Guys” part 1: Bush is back

Yes he is, with obligatory Presidential memoir. Frankly, even aside from my distaste for the man, my initial reaction is to want no part of any discussion of this little return to the national stage by GWB. Regardless of party or political stance these things are always completely fake, tedious and by-the-numbers; does anyone ever actually read these stupid bloody useless, meaningless ghostwritten books?

But I can’t help suspecting that somewhere there are plenty of know-it-alls who would eagerly pounce on this attitude as evidence of that snobbish, out-of-touch “elitism” which it is lately so fashionable to condescendingly tell liberals is the root of all our many failings. So y’know what? Fine; actually, upon thinking about it, I would love to have a lengthy and in-depth national conversation about George Bush and his presidency right now. Let’s get everyone involved. Particularly some of those even-more-fashionable neo-reformed-born-again-this-time-we-mean-it conservatives who have adopted the very convenient line that “George Bush betrayed conservative principles (we’re not going to let that happen again)” of late.

I would absolutely love to hear a conversation with them about Bush and his legacy, actually. Some really good questions present themselves: (more…)

Ugly Americans

I kind of just want to record these comments, here, for myself as much as anything.

The context of the following quotes is America’s latest useless, brainless, hysterical hissyfit, that over the Cordoba center. The Cordoba center will be more familiar to most people, unfortunately, by its condensed and intentionally-charged, as well as critically-misleading name, “the Ground Zero mosque.” As usual, thanks to our “liberal media” for sacrificing both accuracy and objectivity in favor of attention-getting and, not coincidentally, inflammatory phrasing.

I should offer a gold star to The Economist, however, for not only its reasoned and mature perspective on the matter, but for absolutely piling on. A praiseworthy effort.

Sadly, many of America’s so-called “leaders,” have unfortunately been lacking any similar commitment to those national ideals (not to mention the plain, old-fashioned concept of “standing up for what’s right”) which are apparently inconvenient just now.
